The Winter is a visual masterpiece!

In 2011, Melancholy Star first launched into the production of an ambitious project: creating and shooting an original low-budget (mini-micro budget, really) feature film, in Greek language, filmed on location in Greece and London, with an international crew, in a haunted house inherited by director Kostas. The Winter was nominated for a Greek Academy Award for Best Scenography.
The Winter, shot on RED, in less than 20 days in Greece, is visually driven and sensitively shot, featuring lovingly crafted VFX that will be a new benchmark for animation in Greek cinema. Sporting a fantastic Greek cast, including stalwarts Vangelis Mourikis, Efi Papatheodorou, and newcomer Theo Albanis, with a rich soundtrack from Greek music cult legends ‘Active Member’, the elements are in place a singularly unique film.
The film is currently in exhibition, starting with the 2013 Thessaloniki International Film Festival, it's played at the NYC Greek Film Festival and Greek Film Festival Australia. Now showing in cinemasin Greece. For more infomation about the film or distribution, please get in touch.
Written by the in-house duo, Elizabeth & Kostas wrote a script based on a mixture of family ghost stories, ex-pat experiences, and local customs. Kostas’ passion for romantic poetry and tentacles, and Elizabeth’s surreal humor combine with atmosphere and visuals to bring the story to life.
A first feature is always a challenge, and we certainly set ourselves a rather big one: bringing crew and equipment from the US, UK , Poland, and Greece, into an abandoned location, on a tight budget, for a very short shooting period. With a talented crew, the assistance of the locals, and a lot of hard work and improvisation, we made it through.
The film features ‘other worldly’ fantasy sequences, nightmarish beasts, and wedding feasts. With an in-house production design and animation team, we were able to continue to design throughout the process, colour grade, and collaborate internationally on the edit.
