“ Attention is what steers your perception, controls your reality. It's the gateway of the mind."
--- Apollo Robbins
For this year's TED Global 2013 conference, our designer, Elizabeth E. Schuch provided the design for and coordinated the execution of the stage design. An incredible experience, TED is a three-fold production involving live conference speakers, real time/ live filming for private broadcast across the globe, and online video of the talks available shortly after. The design needed to embody this year's show theme 'Think Again', and used ideas from photon particles, showing a lunar landscape at a molecular scale.
What is TED? TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a small conference in 1984, TED has grown to support world-changing ideas with multiple conferences, the TED Prize, and our TED Talks videos. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes.
TEDGlobal 2013 brings together a program of speakers who challenge us to pause for an instant and Think Again. Because we are in the midst of a global remix. Disciplines merge and cross-pollinate. Technology intrudes into biology and society. Power and authority are redistributed. Boundaries shift -- or disappear. Hopes and anxieties collide. A new world is emerging at the intersection of once-separated realities, and everything we think we know might just be wrong. See more at TED.com
With the amazing lighting and palette created by lighting designer Liz Berry, the TED stage was a constantly colour-shifting backdrop for the live stage audience.
In coordination with B-Scenic, the set was built to be shipable and reuseable. Using a mix of recyled and new materials, the set contained constellation sculptures inspired by real star constellations and by particle collisions. Assistant Designer: Janet Lennon helped bring the ideas to life in the build.
The stage show was documented by a battery of cameras, an onstage jib, and needed to look great onstage and in the monitors. Working with the talented TED production team was a pleasure.
